Clinical Considerations: Social Media and Gaming with Tweens and Teens

Many experts believe gaming is the modern babysitter for teens. In 2014, approximately 99 percent of American boys and 94 percent of girls play video games with 97 percent playing at least one hour per day. Are you curious about whether or not gaming is helpful or harmful from a mental health perspective? Join Margaret and Rita for a discussion on the gaming culture, clinical research and interventions.

Objectives:

  • define gaming and impact on relationships and academic performance
  • provide overview of research and possible trends on gaming
  • describe the mental health disorders in DMS 5 commonly recognized in gamers
  • outline clinical interventions with treating a gaming teen
  • highlight a case study of a gamer
  • share current resources for clinicians and general public on gaming
